Tucson, Arizona

Meet our coaches and board members:

Parent Board Member (President)- Sandra Ford

Sandra Ford has a great passion for competitive forensics, and she is excited to see what God will do in Tucson. She feels His timing says that now is the time to embark on this adventure. She learned about Stoa while living in San Diego, California, where she was blessed to participate in the club Paradigm. There she gained vast knowledge on all the different events, which she later used to coach and mentor two different overall national champions for combined scores. She also has had the extreme privilege of helping all three of her teenage children qualify for the National Invitational Tournament of Champions every year that they were eligible.

It is her desire that all children will learn the value of public speaking and be able to use it for the glory of God. She has seen how important this event has been in molding her own children and completely changing their lives. She has been married to her husband James for twenty years and together they are raising their three children and their twin niece and nephew. Two years ago, she and her family moved to Tucson from San Diego, though before that they lived in Minnesota, Indiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Idaho and Utah.

Parent Board Member (Treasurer)- Roxanne Maxwell

Roxanne Maxwell is passionate about God, family, homeschooling and speech & debate.  Realizing the amazing benefits her son developed as a mock trial participant, Roxanne prayed for a Tucson Speech and Debate club to further this life skill.  God was so good, and answered her prayer.  Having witnessed the growth and confidence her children obtained while competing in Team Policy, Roxanne considers it a privilege to serve in this club.  Her hope is to expand this very important skill by helping homeschooled teens better communicate in furthering God’s kingdom.

Married to Max for twenty-three years, they have homeschooled their two children since day one. Landon completed his freshman year at the University of Arizona.  Payton will be a high school sophomore this fall.  Serving in the military has provided the Maxwell’s with the unique opportunity to live in Germany and Florida. God brought them back to Tucson four years ago, which they now consider home.

Parent Board Member (Secretary)- Maryann Oda

The Lord has gifted Maryann Oda with the ability to see a need, develop a plan, and articulate the goal in a logical, concise manner. She is culturally aware, technologically literate, and can be counted on to get a job done right. She has thoughtful, godly insight on a multitude of ideas, which makes her a valuable asset and resource to the Kairos board as well as the students. She is excited to serve on the board, recognizing homeschool speech and debate as the single best way to teach young adults to think critically, communicate effectively, and defend the Christian faith.

Maryann has been blessed to be married to Paul, a computer guy, since 1997. She has four amazing children, ages 7, 10, 12 & 15. She is originally from Massachusetts, but has called Arizona home for the past 31 years. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelors in Media Criticism, and listens to podcasts on economics while she cleans or rearranges furniture for fun.

Parent Board Member (Lincoln Douglas Coach)- Leigh Hardy

Leigh Hardy graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in English. She has been married to her husband Dave for twenty-five years, and they have six children, ages eleven through twenty-two. She has lived in many different places, including Iceland and Canada, and hopes to continue to travel while maintaining a homebase in Tucson. Her hobbies include reading, writing, and educating her children so that they can get good jobs and support her in her old age.

Parent Board Member (Advisor)- Tracie Paulsen

Tracie Paulsen has a passion for families and is certain that God rescued her for the purpose of encouraging others!  God has woven together a potpourri of education, training, spiritual gifts and life experiences in Tracie’s life for such a time as this.  While the Paulsen family has had many incredible experiences throughout their homeschooling journey, they would agree that speech & debate is the ultimate.  Therefore Tracie is excited  to serve on the Tucson Speech & Debate Club board of directors and to help build the Tucson club.  By God’s grace, she hopes to encourage students and parents as they work together to train up their children to follow hard after Jesus and pursue academic excellence through this activity known as speech and debate!

Tracie married her husband, Allen, in 1986, and they have two children.  Their daughter, Melanie is a homeschool graduate and holds a bachelor’s degree in Natural Science & Mathematics.  She teaches science for grades K-6 at Veritas Academy of Tucson, and University Model school.  Their son, Matthew, will be a senior in high school, is excited about the upcoming season of speech & debate (though a little sad that it’s his final year), and hopes to pursue an aviation career with the United States Air Force.  In her spare time, Tracie enjoys reading, cooking, traveling, teaching mini workshops on faith training and spiritual gifts, and mentoring young moms.  She is also a commissioned Stephen Minister and serves on the hospitality team at Revolution Church where she and her family worship.

Head Coach- Audrie Ford

Audrie Ford is a speech and debate alumna with five years experience, and is the 2014 National Champion for combined speech and debate scores. Her other titles include 2012 Extemporaneous champion, 2014 Sweepstakes (overall speech points) champion and 1st place Parliamentary debate speaker as of 2014. Among winning various awards, Audrie has also set records for homeschool competitive speech and debate, including most qualified events for the National Invitational Tournament of Champions.

In what little free time she has, Audrie has interned for a California State Senator, coached speech and debate, and studies at Pima Community College. The rest of that time is spent taking care of her cat, Titan.
